Plot

Nina Graham (Elsie Ferguson) is left penniless on her father's death and becomes a governess for the son of Filmer Jesson, M.P. (Holmes E. Herbert). Unknown to Jesson, his wife Annabelle (Margaret Linden) is in love with an army officer and is planning to run away with him. Before she gets the opportunity, she dies in a car crash. Jesson is devastated, and Nina spends all her time caring for the little boy. After noting how attached the child is to her, Jesson decides to propose. Nina accepts and they go to Paris for their honeymoon. It's not long before Nina wonders if she has made a mistake -- Jesson stiffly believes that she should live up to his idealized (and untrue) vision of Annabelle. When she asks to attend a fancy dress ball, Jesson refuses because he believes Annabelle would never have been interested in such a frivolous affair. Jesson's brother Hilary (Vernon Steele) offers to take her and she accepts. Her costume wins a prize and Jesson is outraged. The marriage continues to go downhill until Jesson discovers some old love letters Annabelle wrote to her lover.
