The name for the Iberian Peninsula in Roman times. During the Second Punic War (218–201 bc), the Romans drove the Carthaginians out of the peninsula and then divided it into Hispania Ulterior and Hispania Citerior. During the reign of Emperor Augustus the latter, also known as Tarraconensis, was split into Lusitania and Baetica.
