meaning 'to or toward this place', is an ancient word that existed in Old English. In current English it is restricted, except for formal or archaic uses, to a number of fixed phrases: hither and thither or hither and yon (= in various directions), and come-hither, used adjectivally to mean 'enticing, flirtatious', as in a come-hither look.
