Hitlerputsch

Hitlerputsch, the abortive revolt attempted by Hitler in Munich in 1923 at a time when the climate of opinion was hostile to the constitutional government after the French occupation of the Ruhr and the crisis of inflation. On 8 November Hitler, with a unit of storm-troopers (SA), kidnapped the heads of the Bavarian government and declared a revolution. The ministers Kahr, Lossow, and Seißer, however, escaped. A second attempt on 9 November took the shape of a march on the War Ministry headed by Hitler and General Ludendorff. In the Residenz-straße near the Odeonsplatz the police opened fire and dispersed the rebels. Hitler was arrested two days later, tried and sentenced to five years' imprisonment, of which he served nine months.
