Hochzeit der Sobeide, a play (dramatisches Gedicht) by H. von Hofmannsthal, published in his Theater in Versen in 1899. Sobeide, who loves Ganem, is to be married against her will to a rich merchant (Reicher Kaufmann). She is brought to his house, and there she confesses to her intended husband that she loves another. He magnanimously frees her to go to her lover Ganem, but she finds him with Gülistane. Broken and contrite, she returns to the merchant's house and hurls herself from the top of a tower. As she dies in the merchant's arms she recognizes his compassion and his love, which she herself, too late, returns.
