The Field Hockey Tournament at the 1999 Pan American Games was held on the pitch of the Kildonan East College near Winnipeg, Canada, from Saturday July 24 to Wednesday August 4. It served as a qualification tournament for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The number one earned a ticket for the Olympic tournament. The men competed for the ninth time at the Pan American Games, the women for the fourth time.

  • Argentina qualifies for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The team from South America joins host Australia and Asia representative South Korea as teams to clinch berths in the Olympic tournament. The 2000 Olympic women’s field hockey tournament will be expanded from eight to ten teams in Sydney.
  • The final marked the third time in four Pan Am tournaments Argentina had met the U.S. in the gold medal game, with the South Americans winning on each occasion.
  • With their silver souvenirs, the U.S. team will get another chance to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney when it travels to Milton Keynes, England for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, from March 23 to April 2.
