"Hollywood" was the second single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her 2003 studio album American Life. It was released on July 3, 2003 by Maverick Records. The single charted in the top ten in Canada, UK, Finland and Italy, but failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first single by Madonna to do so in twenty years.
Madonna performed the song on the 2003 American Life Promo Tour and it was later used as a dancers interlude on the 2004 Re-Invention World Tour using a variation of the Jacques Lu Cont remix. The song was later included on the 2009 greatest hits album, Celebration.

The song suffered from the anti-war message that the original music video of the album's predecessor single, "American Life", had displayed. "Hollywood" became Madonna's first single to miss the Billboard Hot 100 since she first appeared on to the chart twenty years prior with "Holiday".
In an interview, Madonna said of the song: "This song is like a metaphor for me. It's the city of dreams and superficiality. It's the place where you forget about the really interesting things in life. In Hollywood, you can lose your memory and your vision of the future. You can lose everything because you can lose yourself." [1]
The single featured remixes by Jacques Lu Cont, The Micronauts, Paul Oakenfold, Deepsky and Victor Calderone. Sander Kleinenberg's remix can be heard in the vinyl EP Confessions of an Icon: Remix EP, a bootleg record. Kleinenberg's remix is shortened for this release and is an edit of what he played on his radio show.
Madonna performed "Hollywood" on the MTV special, "On Stage and on the Record", as well as part of the "Like a Virgin"/"Hollywood" medley with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, and as an interlude on her 2004 Re-Invention Tour. Both performances took Jacques Lu Cont's "Thin White Duke Mix" of the song as the main basis.
In 2004, a cover version of the song was recorded by indie dance-punk group CSS.
"Hollywood" failed to break onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, but entered the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles Chart at number 103. However it peaked at number one on both the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts.[2] The song did manage to break the top twenty in the singles charts of many other countries in which it was released. It peaked at #2 in the UK Singles Chart.[3]
The music video for "Hollywood" was filmed on June 2 and 3, 2003 at Universal Studios in Universal City, California and directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. In the US, it premiered on June 23, 2003 on VH1 (along with a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the video), June 24 on yahoo.com and June 27 on MTV.
Two official remix videos of "Hollywood" were also released: the "Aviddiva Remix" created by Dustin Robertson was the more popular of the two remixes and featured unreleased footage from the video shoot. The second remix video entitled the "Paul Oakenfold Edit" was released by Warner Bros. Records as a promo-only and consisted mostly of clips from the original video. The video features Madonna in different styles and fashions highlighting the highs and lows of "Hollywood".

In August 2003, the song was remixed with "Into the Groove" and performed with Missy Elliott under the title "Into the Hollywood Groove" as part of a promotional campaign for clothing store GAP. [4] Copies of the promotional CD were given away to customers, and were not available for individual purchase.[5] An extended mix (The Passengerz Mix) was also recorded and appears on the compilation Remixed & Revisited. A promotional video was also shot, which received negative reviews from advertising critics.[6] A parody of the commercial was featured on MADtv which poked fun at Madonna's age.
