Album Review: Home Is in Your Head

Review

Dark, disturbing, and beautiful, His Name Is Alive's Home Is in Your Head develops the deceptively simple, abstractly emotional music they introduced on Livonia. Held together by Warren Defever's artful production, its 23 songs range from jealous contemplation to spiritual concerns, from gentle folk to white noise guitar outbursts. Karin Oliver's supple voice lends itself to an array of musical and emotional settings: she's acidly sweet on "The Charmer"'s brittle taunt "Where is your head now?/I should nail it to her door/Where are your hands now?/I know what you'd use them for." On "Why People Disappear," she's pensive: "Maybe I know as much as I ever will/We've been forever." The numerous instrumentals and interludes add to the overall yearning, searching mood. "Her Eyes Were Huge Things" builds subtle strumming and Oliver's sighs into an evocative spell, while "Hope Called in Sick" crashes in with loud, wailing guitars. The group's sound collages also find more purpose here than on Livonia; the chanting children on "Put Your Finger in Your Eye" are downright unnerving, and "Spirit and Body" conjures a story of loss out of a ticking watch and just-audible snippets of conversation. With the oddly comforting finale, "Dreams Are of the Body," Home Is in Your Head completes a seamless exploration of music and emotion. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

History

Like their 4AD debut, Livonia, His Name Is Alive's Home Is in Your Head comprises tracks that originated in Warren Defever's basement 4-track recorder, later remixed by Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer into something suitable for release. Featuring mostly material recorded from 1989-1990, some songs date from the same era as the songs from Livonia (1985-1989). 4AD's press release for Livonia in 1990 mentions that the band's second 4AD album (which turned out to be this album) was already completed. Home Is In Your Head was released in the fall of 1991.

"Sitting Still Moving Still Staring Outlooking" was later used in the film Jerry Maguire in a key scene. This jokingly earned HNIA the moniker "the band that gave Tom Cruise a nervous breakdown."

Tracks four, five and six are a suite of songs collectively known as "The Song of Schizophrenia".

All of the tracks are written by Warren Defever, credited as His Name Is Alive, except for "The Well", which was written by Karin Oliver, "Tempe", written by Jymn Auge, and "There's Something Between Us and He's Changing My Words", which is a cover of a song by Bone Machine. Defever and Auge actually co-wrote this song, as Bone Machine was an early band of theirs. Guitarist Auge had guested on Livonia, and by this album was a full-time member of HNIA.

A hidden song is included on the last track. After a brief moment of silence following the conclusion of "Dreams Are of the Body", a song called "The Other Body" begins. This is a demo track that ends abruptly, as the tape ran out during recording.
