Home Retail Group (formerly Argos Retail Group) has UK homeowners covered from the inside, out. The company (commonly referred to as HRG) runs the 730-store Argos general merchandise chain, catalog and Web site, and do-it-yourself (DIY) retailer Homebase, with some 345 locations across England and Ireland. Argos, founded in 1973, offers some 19,000 general merchandise products and is a leading retailer of jewelry, small home appliances, sporting equipment, and toys. Homebase, which joined the group in 2002, is England's second-largest DIY chain (behind Kingfisher), offering 30,000 products. GUS spun off HRG, which began trading independently on the London Stock Exchange, in 2006.

Home Retail Group plc (LSE: HOME) is a holding company for the UK and Republic of Ireland retailers Argos and Homebase. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

History

The Company was established in 2000 when GUS plc merged its Argos and Reality UK businesses.[1] It went on to acquire Homebase in 2002 and 33 Index stores in 2005.[1] It was demerged from its parent company, GUS plc, with effect from 10 October 2006.[2] Shares in Home Retail Group were traded on the London Stock Exchange as from 11 October 2006.[3]

Operations

The Company comprises the following businesses:

  • Financial services including HOME Financial Services, comprising HOME Card Services (handling store cards such as the Argos Card and Homebase Card), HOME Insurance Services (handling in the store extended warranties and accidental damage insurances) and HOME Card Transactions (handling processing of in-store EFTPOS transactions).

Home Retail Group employs approximately 57,000 people, with 1,100 stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland and serves over 200 million customers a year.[4]
