Horace Nicholls

Photography Encyclopedia: Horace Nicholls

Nicholls, Horace (1867-1941), English photojournalist and war photographer. After working in Chile and Johannesburg, and successfully covering the Boer War, Nicholls established himself as a freelance photojournalist in London in 1902. He specialized in the regattas, horse races, and social events of the english ‘season’, often using composite printing and other manipulations to enhance his pictures' saleability. In 1917-18 he made a powerful series of photographs of female war workers for the Department of Information. Subsequently, until 1932, he worked at the new Imperial War Museum.
