Review

Hot Rize's debut album demonstrated that traditional bluegrass bands could bring the music into the modern era without turning totally progressive or losing the music's roots. Over the album's 14 tracks, Hot Rize turns in consistently engaging and exciting performances, particularly from vocalist/fiddler/mandolinist Tim O' Brien and banjoist Pete Wernick. It's a terrific debut. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide

Biography

The eclectic Colorado progressive bluegrass band Hot Rize also played traditional bluegrass, jazz, and rock. They came together in 1976 and were named after the secret ingredient of Martha White Self-Rising Flour, the product Flatt & Scruggs had promoted early in their careers. The bandmembers were Tim O'Brien on lead and harmony vocals, mandolin, and fiddle; Pete Wernick on banjo and harmony vocals; and Charles Sawtelle on bass guitar, guitar, harmonies, and lead vocals. Mike Scap departed in 1976 and was replaced by bass player, guitarist, and vocalist Nick Forster, who also became the group's MC. Hot Rize recorded its self-titled debut album, a blend of traditional and new material, in 1979. Their second album, Radio Boogie, came out in 1981. A year later, their alter ego Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers, a parody of hardcore '50s country music, recorded their own album, Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers. In 1984, Hot Rize released a concert album largely comprised of traditional hits and in 1985 released Traditional Ties. In 1991 another Red Knuckles album, Shades of the Past, followed. Their final album, Take It Home, came out in 1992; O'Brien and Wernick went on to successful solo careers, while Forster went on to executive produce the syndicated radio variety show Etown. Sawtelle passed away in March 1999 after a two-year fight with leukemia. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

This article is about the bluegrass band. For the self-rising flour, y'all go see Martha White.

Hot Rize is a bluegrass band that rose to prominence in the early 1980s, consisting of Tim O'Brien on mandolin and fiddle, Pete Wernick on banjo, Nick Forster on electric bass. It also had Charles Sawtelle on guitar until his 1999 death.

Three years later, Bryan Sutton joined the band to play the guitar.

Hot Rize has appeared on national radio and TV shows, and have toured most of the United States, as well as Japan, Europe and Australia.

An entertaining part of their show is to all swap instruments and dress up as a Western swing band called Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers. O'Brien's alter ego is Red Knuckles (archtop guitar), Wernick's is Waldo Otto (lap steel), Forster plays lead guitar, and Sawtelle played electric bass as Slade.

The band takes its name from the leavening ingredient found in Martha White flour and cornmeal products. Interestingly enough, during their concerts, Hot Rize will often perform the theme song to the now defunct Martha White Biscuit and Cornbread Time, giving credence to the fact that they are named for the ingredient in the song. Flatt and Scruggs wrote and performed the theme song when they appeared on WSM's Martha White Biscuit and Cornbread Time radio show in the late 1950's and early 1960's.
