Hottentot Bay

• Location: Namibia

Named after the Hottentot people who are now more usually known as the Khoikhoin 'Men of Men'. They were given the name Hottentot, from the expression hotteren-totteren 'to stammer' or 'to stutter', by Dutch settlers because of the 'clicks' in their language. It is also said that the chant used in their moon-worshipping ceremonies sounded to western ears rather like 'hottentot'.
