Mother Nature is under the microscope at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The popular museum features displays on subjects such as space science, energy, paleontology, chemistry, gems and minerals, ancient Egyptians, Native Americans, and Texas wildlife. The museum also hosts traveling exhibitions detailing a variety of topics. Special features of the museum include an IMAX theater, the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the nearby George Observatory. The Houston Museum of Natural Science was founded in 1909 as the Houston Museum and Scientific Society; its permanent facility was established in 1964.
