How old is chess?

It dates to the Middle Ages: In 1283 Alfonso X (1221-1284), king of Castile and León (Spain), commissioned the Libro de ajedrez, dados y tablas (Book of Chess, Dice, and Backgammon), based on an Arabic text. This book is still considered an important source on leisure activities in the Middle Ages (500-1350).
