Howland is a city in Penobscot County, Maine, United States, which was settled in 1818.[1] The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.3 square miles (91.5 km²), of which, 34.7 square miles (89.7 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) of it (1.98%) is water.
Demographics
The most recent polls taken in Maine, which were held in 2007, there were 1,693 people, 602 households, and 391 families residing in the town. The population density was 45.6 people per square mile (15.2/km²). There were 616 housing units at an average density of 6.9 persons/km² (17.8 persons/sq mi). The racial makeup of the town was 98.16% White, 0.22% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.15% of the population.
There were 552 households out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years.
The median income for a household in the town was $34,082, and the median income for a family was $36,302. Males had a median income of $32,000 versus $17,386 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,466. About 6.9% of families and 11.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.8% of those under the age of 18 and 25.3% ages 65 or older.

Notable People
Dr. Percy Spencer was born and raised in Howland, Spencer later worked for Raytheon where he worked on megnetron devices for the military. He invented the microwave oven after standing in front of an operating magnetron device and discovering the microwaves it emitted had melted a chocolate bar in his pocket.
Scott Garland, or better known as "Scotty 2 Hotty", a former Professional wrestler from the World Wrestling Entertainment, used to own a home in Howland. Garland later moved to Orlando, with his family.
Fire and Ambulance
Howland has a Call Fire Department that services Howland, Enfield, Maine and other surrounding towns. The department is funded by an annual budget from the Town of Howland and fire service contracts with other towns. Other equipment purchases which the town cannot afford are paid for through fundraising efforts. Penobscot Valley Hospital provides Emergency Medical Services to the area with an ambulance that runs out of the Howland Firehouse. The ambulance is staffed with part-time EMTs who are not required to be at the station while on shift.
