Hrabanus Maurus

Hrabanus Maurus (Mainz, c.776-856, Winkel nr. Rüdesheim), Abbot of Fulda from 822 to 842, became Archbishop of Mainz in 847. A pupil of Alcuin, he helped to develop and spread classical learning in German lands. His works, of which the handbook De clericorum institutione was the best known, are written exclusively in Latin. He is believed to be the author of the hymn ‘Veni creator spiritus’.
