Software that checks the validity of tags in an HTML document. Browsers treat errors such as open tags (start tag without an end tag), lack of quotes, extra quotes, etc. differently, and unless an HTML page is tested using both IE and Netscape as well as some of the minor browsers, the page may display differently on screen.
