(b Nuremberg, 24 June 1908; d Berlin, 1 Nov 1942). German composer. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory with Grabner, Ramin and Högner, who led him to an interest in Baroque and pre-Baroque organ music. He then worked as an organist, choral conductor and teacher in Lübeck, Stuttgart (1937-40) and Berlin. Harassment by the authorities led him to suicide. His works consist mostly of choral and organ music, characterized by harmonic boldness within a tonal milieu.
