A compound indicator of distress, compiled by ‘adding together ten measures of human welfare related to economics, demography, health, and governance: income, inflation, demand for new jobs, urban population pressures, infant mortality, nutrition, acess to clean water, energy use, adult literacy, and personal freedom’ (Population Crisis Committee, Washington DC).
