Huntington Station is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 29,910 at the 2000 census.

Huntington Station is a community in the Town of Huntington.

Huntington Station was also the birthplace of poet Walt Whitman. His home remains there as a museum. Across from the museum on Rt 110 is the Walt Whitman Mall.

Geography

Huntington Station is located at 40°50′41″N, 73°24′27″W (40.844698, -73.407416)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.4 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 29,910 people, 9,731 households, and 7,191 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,126.8/km² (5,507.1/mi²). There were 10,028 housing units at an average density of 713.0/km² (1,846.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 71.55% White, 11.56% African American, 0.35% Native American, 3.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 10.04% from other races, and 3.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.74% of the population.

There were 9,731 households out of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.42.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 34.6% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $61,760, and the median income for a family was $67,115. Males had a median income of $43,349 versus $32,935 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $23,689. About 7.9% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.7% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.
