The HX DOS-Extender is a free DOS extender with built-in Win32 PE file format support. Usually the purpose of a DOS extender is to make protected mode features, especially large memory and 32-bit addressing, available for DOS applications. HX fully supports this goal, but goes some steps further. A Win32 API emulation layer is part of HX which allows many Win32 console applications to run in DOS. The developers say this emulation goes far beyond similar approaches in other extenders (such as Borland's PowerPack, WDOSX and Phar Lap TNT).

The Win32 layer has limited support for Windows, DirectDraw, GDI and OpenGL graphics. This lets some Windows GUI applications run in DOS, including Bochs, QEMU, MPlayer, DOSBox and some (mostly older) games.[1]
