Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (百獣戦隊ガオレンジャー Hyakujū Sentai Gaorenjā?), translated into English as 100-Beast Squadron Gaoranger[1][2], was TOEI Company Limited's twenty-fifth production of the Super Sentai television series. Its footage was used in Power Rangers: Wild Force.
Plot
One thousand years ago, a war raged between humans and the demonic Org race. With the help of the Power Animals, the ancient Gao Warriors were able to defeat the Org's leader, Hyakkimaru, and seal the Orgs.
Today, the Orgs have begun to revive, and five warriors have been chosen by the Power Animals. They must abandon their current lives and become the new generation of Gaorangers to protect the life of earth.
Characters
- Red
- Kakeru Shishi (獅子 走 Shishi Kakeru?), the Blazing Lion (灼熱の獅子 Shakunetsu no Shishi?), was a veterinarian before becoming chosen by GaoLion to become GaoRed. He was the last chosen of the Gaorangers, but has an affinity for animals. His other Power Animals are GaoGorilla and GaoFalcon.
- Yellow
- Gaku Washio (鷲尾 岳 Washio Gaku?), the Noble Eagle (孤高の荒鷲 Kokō no Arawashi?) was an airforce pilot before he was chosen first by GaoEagle to become GaoYellow. He was the one to decide that the Gaorangers should refer to each other by color, instead of name. His other Power Animals are GaoBear and GaoPolar.
- Blue
- Kai Samezu (鮫津 海 Samezu Kai?), the Surging Shark (怒涛の鮫 Dotō no Same?), was a freeter before he was chosen by GaoShark to become GaoBlue. He is the most immature of the team. His other Power Animal is GaoGiraffe.
- Black
- Soutarou Ushigome (牛込 草太郎 Ushigome Sōtarō?), the Iron Bison (鋼の猛牛 Hagane no Mōgyū?), was a retired sumo wrestler who was working at a flower shop before he was chosen by GaoBison to become GaoBlack. He is the physically strongest, but shyest of the team. His other Power Animals are GaoRhinos and GaoMadillo.
- White
- Sae Taiga (大河冴 Taiga Sae?), the Belle Tiger (麗しの白虎 Urawashi no Byakko?), was a martial arts student under her father before she was chosen by GaoTiger to be GaoWhite. She is the youngest of the team. Her other Power Animals are GaoElephant and GaoDeers.
- Silver
- Tsukumaro Oogami (大神 月麿 Ōgami Tsukumaro?) (Shirogane (シロガネ?)), the Sparking Silver Wolf (閃烈の銀狼 Senretsu no Ginrō?), was a Gao Warrior from the Heian period over 1,000 years ago. He used the power of the Dark Wolf Mask to defeat the evil Hyakkimaru. However, he was turned into Duke Org Loki (デュークオルグ狼鬼 Dūku Orugu Rōki?) and got the other Gao Warriors to entomb him so he could not do any more harm. He was later awakened as Loki in the present age, but was freed of his curse by the Gaorangers. As GaoSilver, his Power Animals are GaoWolf, GaoHammerhead, and GaoLigator.
Ogre Tribe Org
The Ogre Tribe Org (鬼族オルグ Onizoku Orugu?) is a race of Oni born from the sadness and madness of humans. They often take the forms of idols deep within an underground cavern known as the Matrix.

Names/Puns
Gaorangers
- All the Gaorangers' names have reference to their animals:
- Kakeru Shishi (GaoRed): Shishi means lion.
- Gaku Washio (GaoYellow): Washi means eagle.
- Kai Samezu (GaoBlue): Same means shark, and Kai means ocean.
- Soutarou Ushigome (GaoBlack): Ushi means either cow or bull.
- Sae Taiga (GaoWhite): Taiga is the kana rendition of tiger. It also means "Big Fang".
- Shirogane/Tsukumaro Ōgami (GaoSilver): Shirogane means silver. Tsukumaro translates as demon wolf from the moon. Ōgami is a play in ōkami, which means wolf.
Orgs
- "Org" is short for "Organization", since the Org Tribe is an organization of demons and ogres. Org also resembles the word "ogre".
- All the Highness Dukes' names have reference to Ogres and Demons:
- Shuten is named after Shuten Doji, a Oni referred as a "Japanese Vampire".
- Ura was named after the principal villain who led the Oni defeated by Momotarō
- The Monster Rasetsu was named after a demon in Japanese myth.
- Rakushaasa was named after Rakshasa.
- "Tsuetsue" & "Yabaiba"'s names were puns on "Wand" & "Sword" respectively
- Loki's name is based on the Norse God, though his wolf-like face harkens to Loki's son, Fenrir. Also, Rō means wolf and ki means demon.
- "Senki" means "Thousand Demon", appropriate since he is the combination of the three primary Highness Dukes (Rakushaasa wasn't included) and had some traits of the Dukes as well (such as having the same hair as Loki as well as having Tsuetsue and Yabaiba's headdresses on the backs of his arms).
- The Three Org Brothers from the Super Sentai movie are named after the three prominent Greek Gods: Zeus, Hades and Poseidon.

References
- ^ Gao is Japanese onomatopoeia equivalent to a roaring sound, yet the Gaoranger roll call uses the kanji 牙吠, which mean "fang" and "howl", respectively
- ^ The kanji for 100 Beasts (百獣 Hyakujū?) also means "All of the Beasts."
