Biography

Self-described "indietronic" merchants Hybrasil formed in Wicklow, just outside of Dublin, Ireland, in 2003. Influenced equally by electronic pop pioneers New Order and '90s dance mainstays the Chemical Brothers as they were by the angular post-punk of the Fall and Britpop forerunners like the La's and the Stone Roses, the group soon gained notoriety for their live show, opening for the likes of Republic of Loose, Snow Patrol, and the La's, for the Manchester band's first show in over a decade, before they'd released so much as a single. The group's shrewd pop instincts have led the U.K.'s flourishing college rock scene to embrace them as one of their own, propelling debut single "We Got Music to the radio airplay charts.

Named for the mythical island of Hybrasil (or just "Brazil"), the rural Irish equivalent of Atlantis, the group's lineup was in place from day one, consisting as they did of five long-time friends and journeymen musicians: guitarist Keith Byrne; singer, chief songwriter and additional guitarist Spud Murphy (born John Murphy); drummer Neil Horan; bassist Nipper Kinsella (aka Neil Kinsella); and keyboardist Joe Kavanagh. Stumbling upon their signature sound through intensive rehearsal in their hometown, Hybrasil signed their first record deal in mid-2005 with Dublin label FIFA Records. They put out two limited-edition EPs with FIFA: We Got Music, released in September of 2005, debuted at number 43 in the Irish singles charts, and made a similar impact when it was released in the U.K. the following February, peaking at number 29 on the Student Radio Association chart; the follow-up, When I'm Yawning, was released in July of 2006.

Shortly afterward, Hybrasil ended their deal with FIFA Records and signed with nascent electronic label Manazo Records, managed by a friend of the band, and began to record their debut album. The Monkey Pole was produced by Spud and Pete Meighan, and was released in September of 2007, accompanied by the band's first official single, "God Bless the Devil." ~ Dave Donnelly, All Music Guide

Hybrasil is an indie/electronica band from the small seaside town of Wicklow, Ireland. The group built a homemade studio and spent six months working on demos that they passed out to their friends. In 2005 the band was selected for the IMRO Showcase, Bud Rising Festival and Hard Working Class Heroes Festival. A number of high profile gigs also ,followed supporting such acts as Republic Of Loose, Idlewild and The Chalets, whilst they also opened for legendary Liverpool act The La's, for their first gig in over a decade.

Hybrasil’s debut EP/single We Got Music, was released nationally in September 2005 and debuted at #43 in the Irish charts despite receiving only a limited release. The single attracted the band prominent admirers in Ireland such as 2FM’s Dan Hegarty and Larry Gogan as well as a host of regional radio stations such as Beat 102 103, Limerick Live and Red FM. Today FM’s Tom Dunne also chose the EP as his ‘Single of the Week’ for his show Pet Sounds. The single also received a limited release in Great Britain, Germany and Japan in February 2006, and the band went on a national tour of the UK with The Frank And Walters and Les Carter’s latest musical project: IDOU. We Got Music debuted at #29 on the college airplay charts and was supported by a host of deejays that included such names as Clint Boon, Laurence Guest and Linda Serck.

Hybrasil released their follow-up EP, When I’m Yawning, in August, with an accompanying video that continues to receive airplay on Irish television. They also embarked on their most extensive tour of Ireland to date, in addition to adding a handful of dates in the UK over the course of the following months. The band made its live television debut on the RTÉ’s Tubridy Tonight Show in September.

The band returned to the studio in the early 2007 to put the finishing touches on their debut album but took a break from recording when they were handpicked by Mike Scott to open for The Waterboys on their Irish tour. Their next single, God Bless The Devil, was released on June 22 and A-listed on over a dozen stations in Ireland with 2FM’s, Dan Hegarty describing it as ‘my favourite single at the moment’ and the single was the most popular release on Dublin's Phantom FM. Their critically-acclaimed debut album, The Monkey Pole, was released nationally in September and the band spent the rest of the year touring the country.

In January 2008, Nipper Kinsella parted company under amicable circumstances and the rest of the band made the decision to continue as a four-piece. They are scheduled to appear at several festivals during the summer and are spending the rest of the time working on the follow-up to The Monkey Pole. They describe the musical direction the band has taken as "21st Century Cyborg Rock n' Roll".
