What is chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?
CHLORHEXIDINE topical antiseptic (Hibiclens®, Hibistat®, and others) is used to clean the skin prior to surgery. Chlorhexidine destroys bacteria, which helps prevent infections during and after surgery. Chlorhexidine cleanser (Hibiclens®) may also be used to treat acne.What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions: an unusual or allergic reaction to chlorhexidine, especially oral rinses
breast feeding
any skin rashes or problems
How should I use this medication?
Before surgery, you may need to wash your whole body including your hair in the shower twice. Follow exactly the washing instructions given to you by your health care professional if they are different from these instructions. Wet your body including your hair. Wash your hair using 25 ml (almost 2 tablespoonfuls) of the topical antiseptic. Then wash your body using another 25 ml of the topical antiseptic. Rinse your body. Repeat the process and rinse well after the second washing.To use chlorhexidine cleanser for acne, wet your face then wash your face with about 1 teaspoonful of the cleanser. Rinse and dry your face well. You should use the cleanser twice daily, in the morning and evening, or as directed by your prescriber or health care professional.
What if I miss a dose?
You will only have to use this product prior to surgery or other procedures. It is very important to follow the instructions and wash prior to the event.What drug(s) may interact with chlorhexidine topical antiseptics?
Chlorhexidine topical antiseptic is to be used as a wash before surgery or other procedures. It should not be taken by mouth and should not interfere with other medicines you are taking. Avoid contact with your ears and eyes.Tell your prescriber or other health care professional about all other medicines, nutritional supplements, herbal and non-prescription medicines you are taking. Check before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?
Chlorhexidine topical antiseptic may cause allergic reactions, which can be severe. Notify a health care professional immediately if you have an allergic reaction.Chlorhexidine may cause irritation to skin and may cause you to be more sensitive to the sun.
What side effects may I notice from using chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or other health care professional as soon as possible: shortness of breath
rash
hives
itching
swelling of tongue or throat
cough

Where can I keep my medication?
Keep the medicine out of reach from children.Store away from direct light and heat.
