To divide or connect (syllables, word elements, or names) with a hyphen.

n. hy·phen·ate (-nĭt', -nāt')

One who performs more than one job or function: auditioned singer-dancers, actor-models, and other hyphenates.

hyphenation hy'phen·a'tion n.

Breaking words that extend beyond the right margin. Software hyphenates words by matching them against a hyphenation dictionary or by using a built-in set of rules, or both. See discretionary hyphen.
