Situated beneath the tongue, as the hypoglossal nerve.

  • h. cord — the large aggregation of myogenic cells which migrates from somites 3–5 to a location ventral to the pharynx, and forms the tongue.
  • h. nerve paralysis — causes difficulty in prehension, deglutition and mastication. Unilateral lesions cause deviation of the protruded tongue toward the side of the lesion.
