Review

I Am Gypsy is a CD that lovers of 1990s flamenco greet with high expectations. First, brothers Lorenzo, Paco, and Juan Antonio Salazar (collectively Casta) are part of a Spanish Gypsy family that also includes flamenco singer Porrina de Badajoz (their uncle) and members of the hit female Latin pop duo Azucar Moreno (their cousins). And second, the album boasts such distinguished guests as Jose Miguel and Antonio Carmona (both of Ketama fame) and guitarist Gerardo Nunez. Thankfully, one's high expectations are met on such robust, emotional nuevo flamenco offerings as "Cuando Besaba Tu Cuerpo," "Ay Mi Gitana," and "Me Enamora El Alma." Tristeza (or sadness) is something that Casta expresses in a dramatic, heart-on-his-sleeve fashion; when they express their hurt on "Le Da Lache De Mi," "Lloraras Por Mi Amor," and "Que No Me Quiere," listeners feel it right along with them. This isn't a CD for flamenco purists -- drawing on elements of Latin pop and salsa, I Am Gypsy is contemporary rather than traditional in its outlook. Highly recommended. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
