I Couldn't Be So Annoyed is a collection of recordings and soundtrack songs, mostly culled from Marlene Dietrich's early film career period, spanning roughly 1928-1933. The album begins with "Wenn Die Beste Freundin" and "Es Liegt In Der Luft," two smoky numbers from the Weimer Republic-era revue Es Liegt In Der Luft, one of which is a lesbian song. Highlights include the priceless "Blonde Women" (with a young Dietrich speaking lines such as, "You'll try in vain/You can't explain/The charming, alarming blonde women") and the German-language, Blue Angel version of "Falling in Love Again," featuring the rarely remembered verses. The three songs from 1932's Blonde Venus are accounted for, among them the unforgettable (and delightfully politically incorrect) "Hot Voodoo," a smoking track just begging for remastering, and the album's carefree title track. Also of note is the delicious, semi-spoken "Awake in a Dream" from Desire, which finds Dietrich singing in her classic style, miles removed from the near bird-like warbling utilized in the aforementioned early recordings. Despite lousy overall sound quality (and a serious lack of liner notes), this is a gem of an album that offers a nostalgic glimpse into a time and style that is forever a part of history. ~ Jose F.
