Review

Genius. Pure genius. Way before Rage Against the Machine, before Run-D.M.C.'s collaboration with Aerosmith, and before their infamous collaboration with Public Enemy, Anthrax take the credit -- or blame -- for being the pioneers of merging rap and metal. Released in 1987, their now-classic I'm the Man is a funny tribute/parody/attempt at hip-hop that is not only pulled off successfully, but it's also the first release that showcases Anthrax's sense of humor -- the latter of which was also a first for the genre of speed metal. There are also three live tracks -- one of which is the title track -- as well as a "moshable" version of Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" -- all of which are great but will probably be overlooked. Has it been mentioned that this EP is genius? ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

I'm the Man is the name of the second EP by the band Anthrax. The album was released in 1987 by Megaforce Worldwide/Island Records. The band, Eddie Kramer and Paul Hammingson produced the album, which includes the single "I'm the Man". I'm the Man was certified platinum by the RIAA and is considered among the first rap metal songs. It is somewhat of a comedy/novelty song in which the main guitar riff is based on the melody of the Jewish folk song "Hava Nagila".

"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is a cover version of a song by the band Black Sabbath. At the end of the song, the beginning of Black Sabbath's song "Sweet Leaf" is played.

A 7" single also appeared, containing only tracks 2 and 3.

I'm the Man samples

The chorus of "I'm the Man" is from the Rodney Dangerfield movie "Easy Money," but rather than using a sample, the lines are performed by Frankie Bello. Anthrax even used one of Sam Kinison's famous primal screams for the song.

In "I'm the Man", at about 1:55 - 1:56 (depending on the version) a sample of the Metallica song "Master of Puppets" from their 1986 album Master of Puppets can be heard.

A few times after "I'm The Man" is said, you can hear "Shut Up" from Run DMC's "You Talk Too Much" off their 1985 album King of Rock.

Quite a few times through the song the "Yeah" that begins the song "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" by the Beastie Boys on their 1986 debut, Licensed to Ill is sampled.
