Plot

Jeannie is still Barbara Eden, just as she'd been in the 1965-70 TV sitcom of blessed memory. Despite the passing years, Jeannie still looks great in those harem duds (and behold, she does have a navel). The plot of this TV reunion film has Jeannie searching for her astronaut husband Tony Nelson, who's been lost in space for twenty years. According to Genie Rules and Regulations, she must find a new master soon, or it's back to the bottle. Helping Jeannie in her quest is old buddy Roger Healey (welcome back, Bill Daily). Also on hand is Jeannie's mischievous twin Jeannie II (Ms. Eden again), her invisible dog Jin-Jin, and Chris Bolton as her son Tony Nelson Jr. (who does resemble Larry Hagman, if you squint). I Still of Jeannie was NBC's competition for Game Two of the 1991 World Series. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I Still Dream of Jeannie is a 1991 made-for-television reunion film based on the 1965-70 series I Dream of Jeannie which aired on NBC on October 20, 1991 and produced by Columbia Pictures Television.

Barbara Eden and Bill Daily are the only two regular cast members of the original series to reprise their roles in this movie. Once again, Larry Hagman was unavailable to reprise his role of Tony Nelson since he had just completed a 13-year run on CBS' Dallas and was taking a vacation. Although the character Tony Nelson is mentioned throughout the film, he remains unseen.

The film was directed by Joseph Scanlan and the teleplay was written by April Kelly.

Plot

Colonel Tony Nelson is on a top-secret space mission for NASA and Jeannie does not know of his whereabouts or when he'll be returning home to hear their son Anthony Jr.'s academic presentation speech. When Jeannie goes to NASA to question General Wescott about her husband's mission, he refuses to cooperate. To make matters worse, her jealous and mischievous younger sister Jeannie II reminds Sham-Ir (the chief genie) that since Tony has been away for a long time, Jeannie cannot remain in the plane of reality for more than 3 months without an earthly master. Sham-Ir gives Jeannie 2 weeks to either find her husband or a new master (a single male only) or else she must return to Mesopotamia forever. So Jeannie begins her desperate search for a temporary master which leads her to a singles bar and other misadventures.

Notes

  • I Still Dream of Jeannie was filmed from July to August 1991 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and exterior scenes were shot at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.
  • In an interview about the movie, Barbara Eden said: "We tried to retain the spirit of the original. We wanted to stay as close as possible as to what was done before, because the show is not off the air. It's on all over the world. To change (Jeannie), I think, would be doing the audience a disservice".
  • This movie uses the same opening sequence and theme music from I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later (1985).
  • The magical sound effects from the original series are missing from this movie.
  • At the end of the movie, the in-joke is that Larry Hagman's (or J.R. Ewing's) arch-enemy from Dallas, Ken Kercheval (or Cliff Barnes), becomes Jeannie's new temporary master.
