A genus of protozoan parasites in the phylum Ciliophora.

  • I. multifiliis — causes white spot disease or Ich in freshwater fish in aquariums and hatcheries. Characterized by white nodules on the skin; these may coalesce and cause sloughing of the skin and many affected fish die. Also affects the gills leading to respiratory distress.
