A passionate story helped resurrect Icon Productions. Mel Gibson's movie production company Icon Productions independently financed The Passion of the Christ after Fox passed on theatrically distributing the surprise box office hit. The controversial interpretation of the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus Christ cost about $30 million to make and earned more than $150 million in its first eight days of release. (Independent distributor Newmarket released the film in the US, and Fox subsequently secured distribution rights in Latin America.) Other Icon films include 2006's Apocalypto, released by Disney and 2007's Seraphim Falls, as well as the Gibson vehicles Braveheart, Payback, and What Women Want.

Icon Productions LLC is an American independent production company founded in August 1989 by American-born actor/director Mel Gibson and producing partner Bruce Davey.

Unlike most other independents, Icon internally funds most of its development and packaging costs, mainly by Gibson, allowing it to retain creative control of projects through production. Currently, Icon has almost nothing in production, and is distributing one B-movie.[1] It has been reported that the cause may result as a consequence of Mel Gibson focusing all of his attention on Holy Family Catholic Church.[1]

In the UK and Australia, its DVDs are usually distributed by Warner Home Video, though some UK DVDs have been released by MGM Home Entertainment.

The logo's artwork appears to be a small crop of the Theotokos of Vladimir icon, an Eastern Orthodox icon of Mary, mother of Jesus.[citation needed]
