In modern English usage, the term "idiot proof" describes designs which use defensive design principles such that misuse is difficult or impossible. The implication is that the design would be usable by someone of lower to average intelligence.
The term came into use in the late 1970s to early 1980s.
Several products have been successfully marketed with the catch that they are "idiot proof". The Complete Idiot's Guide to... series are guides designed to play upon this notion.
