Review

AC/DC was fast becoming one of rock's top live acts by the late '70s. Few others could match the band's electrifying live performances: Angus Young's never-ending energy and wise-ass antics, Bon Scott's whiskey-soaked vocals, and the rest of the band's penchant for nailing simple, yet extremely effective and memorable, riffs and grooves. While most other rock bands of the era were busy experimenting with disco or creating studio-perfected epics, AC/DC was one of the few specializing in raw and bluesy hard rock, as evidenced by 1978's live set, If You Want Blood You've Got It. Recorded during their world tour in support of their Powerage album, If You Want Blood contains many of AC/DC's best compositions up until that point: "Bad Boy Boogie" (complete with the break-down section in which Young would "strip"), "The Jack," "Problem Child," "Whole Lotta Rosie," "High Voltage," "Let There Be Rock," and "Rocker." Strangely, their early anthem "Sin City" was not included, and there's a slight sense of studio enhancement on certain tracks. While the first disc of the 1997 box set Bonfire is the best document of live Bon Scott-era AC/DC ("Live From the Atlantic Studios"), If You Want Blood You've Got It is highly recommended. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

If You Want Blood You've Got It is the first live album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, originally released in the U.S.A. on 21 November 1978. All songs were written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young, and Bon Scott.

The album was recorded live during the 1978 Powerage Tour and contains live versions of songs from AC/DC's T.N.T., Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Let There Be Rock, and Powerage albums. It is the last Bon Scott-era AC/DC album produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, who also produced the band's first five studio releases. The album was ranked number two on Classic Rock magazine's readers' poll of "50 Greatest Live Albums Ever". [1]

The album was re-released in 1994 on Atco Records and in 2003 as part of the AC/DC Remasters series.

Track notes

AC/DC's concert at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow on 30 April 1978, Scotland was used for the bulk of the recorded material that appeared on the album. It can be clearly heard during "The Jack" when Bon Scott sang "Any virgins in Glasgow?". This concert will also be remembered for the encore when AC/DC came back on stage dressed in the Scottish Football strip.[2] The songs "Dog Eat Dog" and "Fling Thing" were also performed during the night of the concert but eventually removed from the album. "Rocker" was also performed, but the guitar solo performed in the middle of the song was cut out. The live rendition of "Dog Eat Dog" was released as the b-side of the single "Whole Lotta Rosie/Dog Eat Dog" in November 1978. It was later released worldwide on the 2009 box set Backtracks

A song with the same title, "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)," appeared on AC/DC's next album, Highway to Hell.

The song appeared in the film Empire Records, when the whole cast sings and dances to it in the store where the movie takes place.

Concert Footage

  • The concert was entirely shot in film but the entire footage has never been released. Eventually, "Riff Raff" and "Fling Thing/Rocker" segments were made available on the AC/DC Family Jewels DVD. Footage was also used on the "Rock 'n' Roll Damnation" promotional clip also available in Family Jewels. Also more concert footage was later made available on the Highway To Hell Live Concert DVD. More segments from the concert (alas the songs "Rock 'n' Roll Damnation," "Dog Eat Dog," and "Let There Be Rock") were made available on the DVD Plug Me In, released in 2007, a couple months after the previously mentioned Highway To Hell DVD. The segment "Bad Boy Boogie" was included on the Bonus disc on the three-disc edition of the DVD.
  • Despite the fact that there was no official release of the concert, there is a DVD available called "Let There Be Rock" from the German FNM Label. (Falcon Neue Medien) (4:3 PAL)It contains the footage of a broadcast from BBC Scotland TV who broadcasted the concert. On the DVD appears 37 minutes of the concert: (titles as printed on DVD)
