Mother of Arthur in Arthurian romance. Wife of the Duke of Cornwall (variously, Gorlois or Hoel), she conceives Arthur by Uther Pendragon [Uthr Bendragon], who appears in the likeness of her husband with the help of Merlin's magic. After the death of her husband, she marries Uther. Her Welsh antecedent is Eigr, one of the most beautiful women in Britain.
