Iki (壱岐国 Iki no Kuni) was a province of Japan which occupied the entire area of Iki Island. It is also known as Ishu (壱州).
Political History
Iki is identified with Ikikoku (一支國) mentioned in several Chinese chronicles like the Wei-chih wo-jen chuan section of the Records of Three Kingdoms (although here written as 一大國, but likely a writing error), the Weilüe, the Book of Liang and the Book of Sui. The Wei-chih wo-jen chuan also records about three thousand families living in Iki.
The province ceased to exist upon the abolition of the han system in 1872 by the Meiji Emperor. Iki Province was subsequently merged with other former provinces to form the Nagasaki Prefecture.
