Illogan (pronounced Illuggan) is a village and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, not far from Redruth and Camborne. It is known as the birthplace of the industrial age inventor Richard Trevithick and the location of Magor Farm, the only Roman villa southwest of Exeter (excavated in 1931). In the 18th and 19th centuries, the parish was famous for its mines.[1]

Church and school

The church is dedicated to Saint Illogan, of whom little is known.[2] The tower is all that remains of the medieval church: the new church was separate from it and was built to the designs of J. P. St Aubyn in 1846. Notable features are some fine monuments of the Bassets and others and the granite font.[3] The church contains a brass to James Basset, 1604[4]

The parish has a primary school with about 220 pupils, aged between 4 and 11.[5]

Magor Farm

In 1931 the ruins of a Roman villa were found at Magor Farm, Illogan, and excavated that year under the guidance of the Royal Institution of Cornwall.[6] It is the only Roman villa found as of 2006 in the whole of Cornwall or south-west of Exeter. It was probably the residence of a wealthy Dumnonian who had adopted the Roman lifestyle.[7]
