n.
  1. The visual representation of an object, such as a body part or celestial body, for the purpose of medical diagnosis or data collection, using any of a variety of usually computerized techniques, such as ultrasonography or spectroscopy.
  2. Psychology. The use of mental images to influence bodily processes and to control pain, or to achieve a goal that one has visualized or imagined.

(1) Creating a film or electronic image of any picture or paper form. It is accomplished by scanning or photographing an object and turning it into a matrix of dots (bitmap), the meaning of which is unknown to the computer, only to the human viewer. Scanned images of text may be encoded into computer data (ASCII or EBCDIC) with page recognition software (OCR). See micrographics, image processing and document imaging.

(2) Creating the illusion of a live performance with audio components by positioning sounds in different locations. Stereo and surround sound enhancements are designed to make listeners feel that they are in a real theater, night club or some other venue where music is being played live.

The creation of digital, print, or film representations of anatomical structures for the purpose of diagnosis.

The production of diagnostic images, e.g., radiography, ultrasonography, or scintigraphy.

  • electrostatic i. — a method of visualizing deep structures of the body, in which an electron beam is passed through the patient and the emerging beam strikes an electrostatically charged plate, dissipating the charge according to the strength of the beam. A film is then made from the plate.
  • nuclear i. — see scintigraphy.
  • organ i. — outlining the size and location of organs by the injection of nuclides into the animal and observing their location by the use of a rectilinear scanner or a scintillation camera. See also scintigraphy.
