Biography

Immaculate Machine -- taken from a Paul Simon song -- is an indie rock trio from Victoria, British Columbia. Longtime friends Brooke Gallupe (guitar/vocals), Kathryn Calder (keyboard/vocals), and Luke Kozlowski (drums/vocals) formed the band in October 2002. The trio self-released The View EP in 2003 and the full-length Transporter in 2004. At a show in Vancouver, the band caught the attention of Mint Records, who signed the band in spring 2005 and released Ones and Zeroes later that year (an EP of French versions of six of the tracks, Les Uns Mais Pas Les Autres was also issued the following year). In addition, Calder contributed piano and vocals to the New Pornographers' Twin Cinema and joined the resulting tour. For their 2007 album, Fables, the group added some outside instrumentation to their sound (musical saw, strings, backing vocals from Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos) and turned in a record that improved on their already impressive résumé. High on Jackson Hill followed in 2009. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide

History

Formed in the early 2000s as a trio consisting of Brooke Gallupe, Kathryn Calder and Luke Kozlowski, the band released an EP and a full-length album independently before signing with Mint Records in early 2005.

Their Mint Records debut, Ones and Zeros, came out on September 6, 2005, and they supported the album with a tour of Canada and the United States. That year, Calder also became a sometime member of The New Pornographers, appearing on the album Twin Cinema and touring with the band. She is the niece of New Pornographers leader A.C. Newman.

In early June 2007, the band's song "Jarhand", the first single from their third album Immaculate Machine's Fables, was featured as the iTunes free single of the week.

In 2009, the band saw some lineup changes. Drummer, Luke Kozlowski left the band and was replaced by Aden Collinge.[2] Caitlin Gallupe, Brooke's sister, joined the band on bass guitar.[3] She previously designed the band's album covers and performed some backing vocals on Immaculate Machine's Fables. The group also added a second guitarist, Jordan Minkoff and an occasional member, Leslie Rewega, on keys, percussion and background vocals.
