Sports Science and Medicine: immersion injury
 

An injury caused by falling or jumping into very cold water. Sudden immersion into freezing or near freezing water can be fatal. Very cold water in the ears and/or nose can cause a vagal reflex with instantaneous cardiac and respiratory arrest.
