the transformation of a cell population with a finite life span to one possessing an infinite life span. It is a characteristic of cancer cells, and is of practical importance in, e.g., the creation of monoclonal antibodies. Immortalization of eukaryotic cells may be effected experimentally by infection with certain viruses, or by fusion of the cell with a neoplastic cell to form a hybridoma.
