This term describes when a players hand is made stronger. Depending on the type of poker, a player may improve his hand by receiving new cards or by the addition of community cards to the board.
SoundPoker Says: In order to improve your hand, you must hit one or more of your outs.
For example, imagine a hand of Texas Hold'em in which you held J - 10 and the board currently showed an A - Q - 2. A King will complete an Ace high straight ( A - K - Q - J - 10 ), a Jack or 10 will each give you a pair ( J - J or 10 - 10). If you were to hit a King, Jack or 10, you are said to have improved your hand.
"I quickly folded to my opponents raise after the turn failed to improve my hand."
