The first of nine Lp's released by Ajax (a collector's label) in the 1970's that traces all of trombonist Will Bradley's recordings as a leader, the 14 selections on this date are from the earliest period of Bradley's big band. Pianist-arranger Freddie Slack and drummer-vocalist Ray McKinley (who was really an unbilled co-leader) are the most significant of the sidemen although trumpeter Steve Lipkins and Peanuts Hucko (mostly on tenor) also have their spots. Since these numbers were recorded before Bradley started having boogie-woogie flavored hits, the emphasis is on swinging renditions of standards such as "Love Nest," "Memphis Blues," "I'm Comin' Virginia" and "The Johnson Rag"; plus there are some vocals from Carlotta Dale and one apiece from Larry Southern and Ray McKinley ("Old Doc Yack"). Swing completists will want all nine of these hard-to-find volumes despite the lack of liner notes. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
