In Reih und Glied
In Reih und Glied, a novel in five volumes by F. Spielhagen, published in 1867. Leo Gutmann, after participating in an unsuccessful revolt, flees to America. When, some years later, he returns with his socialist principles unchanged, he is able to persuade a prince to put into operation his plans for social amelioration and reform. But his schemes fail in consequence of working-class resistance. Leo, who appears to be modelled on F. Lassalle, is simultaneously involved in intricate love-affairs, and is killed in a duel arising out of one of these.
