In Thine own image, art song

  • Main Performer: Samuel Adler
  • Genre: Vocal
  • Period: Modern (1870-)

Review

Samuel Adler is an American composer of German birth with a major interest in art songs. In Thine Image is an individual song, not part of a cycle. Its text is by Fania Kruger, an elderly poet from the Austin, Texas area. Adler was deeply affected by this poetry, which he first encountered when a friend gave him a collected edition, and later became the poet's close friend. The song is a moving statement of belief in the kinship of man, and the relationship of all men to God as Creator. Its text portrays a number of speakers of different colors, all of different color, all made in God's image, which is depicted as changing according to the color of each person. Adler dedicated the song to the famous American baritone Mack Harrell, who often assigned it to his students. ~ All Music Guide
