Incident is the national level cultural festival of National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Karnataka, India. It is generally held during the even semesters of the academic calendar (mostly in February).
Incident was first conducted in 1980 and has grown over the years to become one of the largest cultural festivals in South India and attracts student participation in huge numbers.
Held over five days, the festival encompasses a gamut of events, ranging from dance and dramatics, music, painting, fashion and quizzing. Incident provides an ideal platform for students to get together and display their considerable non-academic talents while still having fun. In addition, the Incident Pro-Nite features top Indian bands, and draws crowds from all around India. A large number of the events are conducted and judged by professionals. Incident also has a rich heritage of quality literary events, named QuizFest, that have produced some of the brightest and best quizzers and debaters in the country.Another thing that makes Incident unique are the Beach events which no other college in the country can boast of. It is a major attraction for students to have fun on the exotic Arabian Sea coast.
Encore : The ProNite
The grandeur and sheer brilliance of INCIDENT reaches a crescendo when the musical genius of renowned artists is exhibited in the defining event – the ProNite.
Be it the rhapsody of KK, the melody of Indian Ocean, the beats of Euphoria, the rhythm of Parikrama or the magnetism of Yell-O, the ProNite always leaves the audience swooning to the thunderous vibe of a generation. The previous year, in particular, witnessed an enrapturing performance by one of the most mellifluous voices of the nation – KK. With an audience of over 3000 chanting in unison, “Encore!”, the ProNite truly brought to the fore the essence of INCIDENT. As the amphitheatre reverberates to the sound of music, thousands gather to experience this colossal event which is the brightest jewel in the crown that is INCIDENT.
Crossfade : Pro – DJ Competition
Electrifying electronic music, booming speakers amplifying every matched beat, as the DJ maneuvers deftly from song to song; the mixing, the scratching, the looping – this is DJ Nite!
An event of tremendous magnitude, the DJ Nite invites professional DJs from all over India to come together and compete in a battle that boils down to the ‘survival of the catchiest’. CROSSFADE' 08, headlined by DJ Inferno left the youth swaying to numerous compositions of critical genius. The crowds thoroughly enjoyed themselves, thereby highlighting Crossfade as one of the most popular events.
Adjudicated by reputed experts from the mainstream recording industry, this event promises to propel the best in the business into the limelight, on a night to remember.
Bandish/Pulse : Musicals
The musical night provides for audiences with a sense of thrill and excitement - a night for some to unwind, and others to savor what they enjoy best. From melodies to metal, from classical to country, and from raagas to rock, the night showcases them all, portraying some of the most gifted musicians from all over India. A perfect blend of soothing melodies in the Eastern musicals, and pulsating beats in the Western, have all music lovers enthralled. College bands from all over the country battle it out, mesmerizing the crowds late into the night, while the music reverberates in our minds long after the culmination of the event.
Haute Couture : Fashion Show
Wooing designers, models and innovative creations, Haute Couture is a fusion of glamour, flair and vibrance. One of the premier events of INCIDENT, it attracts a large and diverse crowd from across the country.
INCIDENT’s very own fashion show is characterized by sparkling lights, magnificent costumes, gorgeous models, flamboyant sets and a roaring crowd. The sight is truly mesmerizing!
This dazzling display of colour and creativity makes Haute Couture the crème de la crème amongst college level fashion extravaganzas in India.
Promenade : Dance Competition
Promenade is the premier dance event of INCIDENT. It offers a time for release and fun by allowing oneself to explore a variety of dance styles and rhythmic music. The competition is a real treat for dance lovers as the mesmerizing performance put in by the participants truly blows you away.
The event music includes everything under the sky, ranging from jazz to hip-hop. The participation has continually grown in size and quality through the years and is now one of the most fun-filled and entertaining events at INCIDENT.
Excitement and thrills are guaranteed at this event that draws in a wide and varying crowd, helping the participants imbibe a feeling of joie de vivre.
Sunny Side Up : Beach Events
Where sea meets land, where salty spray kisses the sand… the beach is one of the most fascinating landscapes man has ever seen, and no other college in India can boast of a private beach. The beach events are a key part of INCIDENT, drawing hundreds of people every evening to participate in a multitude of challenging events. With a snack counter nearby and the jockeys jamming all evening to win the coveted War of DJ’s, there’s no reason to leave until the sun sets and the last streak of red disappears into the night sky. Football, volleyball, races, sand-castle building and much more are set up every year, and it invariably proves to be the most popular afternoon event on all five days. SANDEMONIUM – a recent addition to the beach events - has proved to be an enthralling experience for all alike. The challenges get tougher, the fun boundless, and the participation simply overwhelming! Sandemonium highlights the lighter side of INCIDENT, and beckons the visitors to lose themselves in the evening revelry.
Informalz ; Colours in Chaos
Informalz is like the pilgrimage for performers and fun loving audiences. Jam packed stages, a cheering junta, outrageous yet vastly entertaining competitions, with great prizes to boot. Informalz in a nutshell is one of the most definitive events of INCIDENT. Held in the heart of the campus, over the entire duration of incident, informalz always attracts massive crowds and never disappoints. Arguably the most successful event of past INCIDENT’s, Informalz gives people the opportunity to let loose, freak out and ensures a gigantic and jaw dropping experience. Although there is a lot of frantic activity at one of the privileged portals of the college at this time, the informalz always leaves the audiences enthralled and wanting for more. The encouraging emcee’s and innovative games ensure that the enthusiasm and interest is always at fever-pitch. A vast array of goodies and other refreshment stalls guarantee that the folks are never away from the excitement. So come on in and join us, where the fun never ends.
Slam Dunk : Basketball Tournament
One of the flagship events of Incident, SLAMDUNK is a fusion of style, sportsmanship and athleticism. An inter-collegiate, invitational basketball tournament, SLAMDUNK attracts professional basketball teams and fans alike from all over the country. The tournament is hallmarked by a high degree of professionalism, an impeccable quality of game play and an insatiable thirst for success. The Dunk Contest promises to enthrall the audience with some high flying action. These factors and more have made this tournament one of the most popular among those around with many teams battling it out just to be a part of SLAMDUNK. A tournament par excellence, SLAMDUNK is a display that must be seen to be believed.
Mr & Miss Inci
Mr. and Miss Inci is a personality contest to identify and celebrate the most spontaneous people at INCIDENT. One of the biggest stage events, it challenges the participants’ creativity, while simultaneously enthralling an exuberant audience to an evening of non-stop entertainment. The event culminates in the crowning of the two brightest stars as Mr. and Miss Inci, truly a prestigious tag at one of the biggest cultural festivals of the country.
Expose
Expose is INCIDENT's ode to the world of photography. This year's competition invites students to capture and share their instances of brilliance coupled with spontaneity. The organizers recognize the ability of photography to convey the great emotional depth and understanding of issues that may often be too difficult to explain or discuss. Photography is not a sport! It has no rules. Everything must be dared and tried! Expose' 09 explores the world of digital blasphemy!
Kalakriti
We at NITK believe that the rawness of technical brilliance must be accentuated with a flavour of finesse imparted by the fine arts. Kalakriti during INCIDENT' 09 will showcase sketching, painting, mehendi, cartooning, rangoli, collage, face painting and abstract art in an attempt to conjure a broad, wholesome, charitable view of culture, craft and everything that is beautiful .
Digital Assault
Gaming is bigger than ever before and it has no intentions of slowing down! Every year multitudes join the community, celebrating the marriage of passion and electronic sports. INCIDENT promises to be the Mecca of gaming prowess, attracting gamers from all over, battling it out on the simulated landscapes of CounterStrike, Warcraft, Quake and many more as they pay homage to the Gods of tactical brilliance and strategic wizardry.
Workshops
We at NITK believe that work and fun are two sides of the same coin. Over the years, several workshops have been conducted at INCIDENT, vis-à-vis digital photography, animation, sand modeling, kite flying, paragliding and various dance workshops. These workshops cater to the different tastes of the youth. Experts in these areas grace INCIDENT by attending the workshops and imparting their invaluable knowledge and expertise.
Hindi & Kannada Events
INCIDENT prides itself in being one of the very few cultural fests in the country that caters to vernaculars. We have an entire set of events in Hindi and Kannada ranging from poetry to essay writing to debating and extemporè. Like all our other events, these events also witness a large scale of participation.
QuizFest
General Quiz
It is the main draw at QuizFest. This event has witnessed fierce rivalry amongst teams, with participation from colleges all over India. Traditionally, the General quiz has been conducted by the hugely popular quizmaster Arul Mani of the Karnataka Quiz Association (KQA), a former Mastermind India semi-finalist.
Lone Wolf
The Lone Wolf quiz is one of the most challenging quizzes at Incident. It’s the only solo quiz, with each participant having nothing but his own knowledge and presence of mind to crack the questions thrown at him during a marathon event. The Lone Wolf Quiz draws participants and enthusiastic crowds alike.
Biz-Tech Quiz
This quiz tests participants’ knowledge in the fields of business, science and technology. It combines scientific history with current market trends and cutting edge technological breakthroughs. This quiz has something to offer to both the budding technologists and the management enthusiasts.
Sports-Ent Quiz
This quiz brings together participants with interests in sports, literature, music, movies and pop culture. A hot favourite with the youth, this quiz is now a part of every cultural festival’s itinerary. The quiz’s abundant audio-visual content ensure that even non-quizzers find this event extremely exciting.
India Quiz
The India Quiz has been an integral part of QuizFest since its inception. It focuses on the rich and diverse aspects of Indian heritage, culture, history, and arts. With an emphasis on knowledge specific to our nation, the India Quiz promises to be an extremely enriching experience.
Daily Events
Daily Events are meant to tickle the grey cells while the participants are not busy with the main quizzes. These include theme-based quizzes, word games, crosswords and brain-teasers.
Centerstage
Centerstage is the showpiece dramatics event at Incident and attracts the cream of the theatre populace from the region. The event is an outlet for students to voice their views on issues of social, artistic and cultural significance.
Spot-Light
For the first time ever, Incident ’08 featured a full-length production by the Literary, Stage and Debating Society of the college. The event provided an opportunity for theatre enthusiasts of the college to work hand-in-hand with established theatre groups from Bangalore and Manipal to ensure high standards. The plays featured at Spotlight ’08 were of extremely high quality.
The NITK Debate
Digressing from previous debates, Incident ’09 will focus on the parliamentary style of debate with an emphasis on teamwork, quick thinking and logical arguments. Teams will battle it out to showcase a united front, conjure innovative rebuttals and implement a cohesive strategy in a series of high energy and vibrant debates. Judged by personalities who are experts in their respective fields, the NITK Debate promises to be a top draw event both among participants and spectators alike.
Just-a-minute (JAM) is a solo speaking competition that tests the participants’ skill to speak coherently and their command of the English language. Participants are required to speak uninterrupted on a given topic while their opponents stand poised to point out flaws in their speech.
Extempore is all about speaking convincingly and sensibly on topics given on the spot. Spontaneity and wit are effectively measured in this keenly contested event.
Literary Events
Dumb Charades as it is popularly known, is a miming event that has always proven to be one of the most attended events at any cultural fest. DC at Incident is no different and witnesses participation from across the country.
Potpourri is a fun filled medley of Dumb Charades, Pictionary, Twenty questions and a host of other events. It’s an excellent mix that never fails to attract participation and audience alike. Co-ordination, creativity and the ability to think on your feet form the crux of this event.
Mock Press is an event in which participants don the role of a famous personality and answer questions posed by the judges and the audience, as in a press conference. Factuality, humour and presence of mind are an essential part of this event.
Word Games at Incident include events like Crossword, What’s the Good Word and Scrabble, which test participants’ vocabulary, their command over the English language and analytical thinking.
