incubation

incubation, practice common among Greeks and Romans of sleeping when ill in the temple of a god, most usually of Asclepius, so as to receive from the god in a dream information about a remedy (or sometimes help in other troubles). Such a cure is described by Aristophanes in his comedy Plutus. See also ARISTEIDES (3).
