Location
The Institute is located in Kozhikode district, (also known as Calicut), in the state of Kerala, which is very popular among tourists for its natural beauty. Calicut is a historic city where Vasco da Gama first established Indo-European business relationships, by discovering the sea route from Europe to India in 1498.
The campus on a hilltop, located amidst the scenic setting of the Western Ghats, a mountain range that spans most of the Indian west coast. The campus of IIMK was referred as the 'God's own Campus' by former president of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the inaugural function.
History
Founding
IIMK was instituted in 1996 by the Government of India as the 5th IIM in the country, in collaboration with the Government of the state of Kerala.
Evolution
In 1997, the pioneering batch of 42 students commenced at the temporary campus at the National Institute of Technology Calicutin Kettangal Village. In 2000, the site of the present campus, atop two hills in the scenic Kunnamangalam district of Kozhikode, was identified. The following year, the late Joseph Stein (also the architect of the India Habitat Centre in Delhi) and Stein Mani Chowfla Architects began the design and construction of the institute. In 2003, IIMK moved into its now-famous hill-top campus. The then President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. A.K. Antony, inaugurated the campus.
The institute has emerged as a centre of excellence in management education and earned a unique position for itself in this field.
Academic Programs
Post-Graduate Program in Management (PGP)
The Post-graduate Program in Management is the Institute's flagship educational program preparing young graduates for senior-level positions in industry. This 2-year program lays great emphasis on knowledge assimilation, as opposed to simply imparting it. Towards this it uses a wide variety of pedagogies: lectures, case studies, exercises, role-plays, simulation, video shows and more. The evaluation system is rigorous, comprising quizzes, assignments, mid-term and end-term examinations.
The program also stresses "learning to learn" through requirements of library-based self-study, group work, open-ended discussions and real-life projects. The cluttered program leaves little time for students to ponder on any subject in detail. The students inculcate the spirit of 'Dream-Innovate-Achieve' and imbibe social concern as an integral part of the learning process. The institute distinguishes itself from other IIMs in offering greater freedom to students in their intellectual pursuits. As such, attendance in lectures is not mandatory, as the institute believes that students ought to be offered a choice as regards what they want to learn
Executive Management Education Program (eMEP)
.
Management Development Program (MDP)
IIM Kozhikode's Management Development Programs are a series of innovative high-impact training programs to meet emerging requirements of the industry. While emphasizing practical application, the programs also provide sound conceptual foundation in the areas concerned. Programs range from three to six days. IIMK also conducts custom-designed programs upon request from business, industry and other organizations/Government departments, to train officers and executives.
MDPs are generally conducted at the campus itself. MDP Calendar 2008.
Fellow Program in Management (FPM)
In 2007, IIMK started offering the FPM program in all management disciplines. This is a 3-4 year resedential program, in which the first year is common with the PGP program, and subsequent years are to be spent on research and teaching. Fellows are trained to join academia or management research on graduation.
Centre of Excellence(CEx)
IIMK incubates a Centre of Excellence(CEx), where youth from the marginalized sections of society, such as the SC/STs, are imparted training to make them intellectually and emotionally capable of joining reputed companies and educational institutions. The skills taught also make them capable of clearing entrance exams of various educational institutions. The CEx now functions as the Kerala Chapter of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
The Centre of Excellence stands out as the only such initiative amongst institutes of higher learning in the country, underlining IIMK's commitment to the real upliftment of society.
Faculty Development Program (FDP)
IIM Kozhikode's Faculty Development Programs groom budding faculty members of management schools of the country. The duration ranges from three days to three weeks. The programs aim at both enhancing subject knowledge in different functional areas and improving delivery skills in classrooms. The Institute Faculty Development also includes a Post-Doctoral Research Program.[1]
Research
Research forms an integral component of the faculty's work at IIM Kozhikode. Faculty members undertake research on a wide range of topics. Projects are funded either through IIMK's 'Small Grant Research Project' scheme, by external sources such as the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India ,Government of Kerala or through collaborations with foreign universities/research institutes. IIM Kozhikode faculty and staff regularly publish their work in reputed refereed national and international journals. During the academic year 2002-2003, 30 journal articles, 9 book chapters, 4 books and monographs were published.
