The Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan (currently functional) at IIT Kanpur, forms a part of the league along with eight new IITs proposed by the MHRD, Government of India.

The seven old IITs are located in Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, and Roorkee. With the plan to setup eight more IITs in the states of Rajasthan, Bihar (Patna), Andhra Pradesh ( Hyderabad), Mandi Himachal Pradesh, Orissa (Bhubaneshwar), Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat (Gandhinagar) and Punjab (Rupnagar), the total number of IITs will be increased to 15.

History

This new institute was established by MHRD, Govt.of India in year 2008. The classes for current academic session are currently being held at IIT Kanpur, which has been designated as the mentor IIT for looking after the incubation activities of the new IIT in Rajasthan. The academic session in IIT Rajasthan has already commenced from August 2008. The institute is likely to be set up at Jodhpur, following the recommendations of a high-power committee headed by Prof Vijay Shankar Vyas. The final approval will be done by the Central Government very soon.

Academic Programs

IIT Jodhpur currently offers undergraduate programs in three disciplines:

Admission to these programmes is through the JEE and forty students in each branch are admitted after completing 10+2 schooling.
