Indian Institute of Technology, Patna ( also known as IIT Patna or IITP), an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology located in Patna, India, forms a part of the league along with 15 (7 existing, 8 proposed) other IITs in India. It is the eighth member of the IIT fraternity [1].
The seven old IITs are located in Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, and Roorkee. With the plan to setup eight more IITs in the states of Rajasthan (Jaipur), Bihar (Patna), Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad), Himachal Pradesh (Mandi), Orissa (Bhubaneshwar), Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat (Gandhinagar) and Punjab (Rupnagar), the total number of IITs will be increased to 15.

History
Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (IITP) was formally registered as a society on July 25, 2008 and its academic programmes commenced from August 6[2], 2008.IIT Patna has been placed under the mentorship of IIT Guwahati during its formative period [3].
Campus
IIT Patna’s campus will be on the outskirts of Patna (a small town named Bihita) in a 600-acre (2.4 km2) campus. The campus will have 45,000 sq ft (4,200 m2) of space.It is expected that all operations will shift to the main campus by July 2010.Two hostels to house boys and also available next to the academic area.Girls are allotted flats nearby with faculty members living in the same building.
Classes are conducted by newly recruited permanent faculty under the guidance of IIT Guwahati faculty. Classes are currently started in a temporary campus in New Govt. Polytechnic, Patliputra Colony, a posh area of Patna[4].
Facilities
- Hostels
IIT Patna has two hostel buildings which has already been renovated and modernised. The hostel buildings are situated in a walled compound adjacent to institute building. Each hostel has fifty rooms. Each room will have two occupants. Each room has an individual cot, reading table, chair and wardrobe for each of its occupants. The rooms are well lit, well ventilated and will be wired to the local area network for Internet access.
- Computer Network
In order to facilitate e-learning every student will be issued a state of the art laptop by the Institute for his/her academic use. A local area network will cater to the students' needs. To start with, the institute will have a 4 Mbit/s (1:1) Internet connection.
- Laboratories
All major laboratories are being setup in the institute building. The labs required for the 1st,2nd and 3rd courses are ready.
- Library
The institute library has a collection of huge number of text and reference books related to the courses of study.
- Student Activity Centre (SAC)
A student activity centre with modern amenities and a gymnasium will be ready soon. The SAC will be the center of all student co-curricular and extra curricular activities.

- BTech in Mechanical Engineering
